Bring on Autumn! Lacey Chabert, Jodie Sweetin and Ashley Williams Lead Hallmark Channel's Fall into Love Lineup
His & Hers, starring Chabert and Elliott, will premiere on Saturday, Sept. 7. According to the official synopsis, the movie will tell the story of "married couple Dana (Chabert) and Mark (Elliott)" who are "high-powered lawyers at two separate New York City law firms." "They soon find themselves on opposing sides of a messy divorce between two reality stars, Sammy and Brett. When both clients are unable to compromise, Dana and Mark are headed for a courtroom showdown that results in tensions infiltrating their otherwise happy household," the synopsis teases.
Jodie Sweetin and Corey Seiver lead The Heiress and The Handyman, premiering on Sept. 14. Per the network's description, "After losing her fortune, June Waltshire (Sweetin), an heiress moves to a rural farm where she mistakes her handsome neighbor Bart Hudson (Sevier) for the handyman. Bart and June form a friendship and work together to reclaim her family’s fall fair legacy, taking on apple pies and the livestock parade. As they prepare for state fair domination, they learn a lot about each other’s lives."
Extra note here, this movie is premiering August 29 on Hallmark Movies Now.
Falling Together — which is set to premiere Sept. 21 — brings together Ashley Williams and Paul Campbell. According to the movie's official logline, the movie will tell the story of Natalie (Williams) who "just relocated to Pittsburgh for work and is eager to become part of her new town." "While exploring her surroundings, she comes across the perfect opportunity for involvement and joins the Walk to End Alzheimer’s as a volunteer," the description continues. "Meanwhile at home, her efforts to bring the building residents together as a community have fallen flat, and Mark (Campbell), the prickly super, advises her to leave well enough alone. As the two spend time together while Natalie continues her quest to win over her neighbors, she and Mark become close and a spark begins to grow." Just when it seems like the two have built "harmony," the synopsis teases "things unexpectedly unravel. Disheartened, Natalie focuses her time and energy on the Walk which just may be the path to healing and happily ever after."
Premiering on Sept. 28, The Real West stars Kimberley Sustad, Lucas Bryant and James Denton. Per the network's synopsis, "A family vacation to a working Ranch introduces Professor Rebecca (Sustad) to Jake West (Bryant). Rebecca is a widowed mom of two and Jake is a handsome cowboy who never settled down. The only complication is that Jake’s not exactly the available type."
Erin Cahill and Wes Brown team up for Autumn at Apple Hill, premiering on Oct. 5. "Based on the book by Angie Ellington. Newly divorced, Elise (Cahill) is renovating an inn that she inherited from her grandparents," the synopsis reads. "When Luke (Brown), CFO of a major hotel chain, arrives in town, she does her best to scare him off… but Luke just might be the best person to help her restore the Inn at Apple Hill to its former glory."
The Fall into Love lineup concludes with Janel Parrish, Dominic Sherwood and Cassandra Potenza starring in Haunted Wedding, premiering on Oct. 12. Per the movie's logline, "Amateur ghost hunters Jane (Parrish) and Brian (Sherwood) are looking forward to their upcoming wedding at a famously haunted inn, until their plans are disrupted by unexpected polter-guest Angelique (Potenza) – a ghost in an 18th century wedding dress, who mistakes Brian for her long dead fiancé."

Texas Artists Eli Young Band and George Birge Lend Voices on Tender-Hearted New Tribute of Country Classic “Amy’s Back In Austin”
Hailing from Denton and Austin, Texas respectively, Eli Young Band and George Birge have teamed up to record a tender-hearted new cover of the 1994 hit song “Amy’s Back in Austin.” The melodious new single is the third release from the upcoming tribute album God Blessed Texas, which pays homage to American country music band Little Texas. The new music is available for streaming and download HERE. Superbly crafted, “Amy’s Back in Austin” tells the story of a naive young couple seeking a better life by leaving their hometown together. Unfortunately, they learn the grass isn’t always greener on the other side and end up parting ways; he heads West and suspects she’s returned home. His love for her remains and occupies his thoughts, leaving listeners with a strikingly heartfelt ballad. Growing up, I was always a fan of Little Texas,” reveals Mike Eli – Eli Young Band. “Their songs were a huge part of country music in Texas. I was excited to be asked to sing on the record and it’s a huge honor to be part of this project.” “Little Texas was a staple in my childhood, and ‘Amy’s Back in Austin’ was an era-defining song for me,” shares George Birge. “With Eli Young Band being one of my biggest musical influences, getting to share this track with them feels like a full circle moment for me in Country music. To be asked to be a part of this tribute album is such a huge honor.” “We left Texas on a windy night In a beat-up Chevy van We loaded it up with our innocent dreams And all the love we had We didn’t know then how hard it was Livin’ on our own I’d find her cryin’ late at night Talkin’ to the folks back home I wonder what went wrong And where is she now I’d love to know I bet Amy’s back in Austin Workin’ at the LaZona Rosa Cafe I remember the night we lost it And the day she went away Was it the angry words or did she miss her momma I don’t know but it don’t feel right I bet Amy’s back in Austin And I’m missin’ her tonight…” “Amy’s Back in Austin” was co-written by Brady Seals and Stephen Allen Davis. Brandyn Steen served as Executive Producer on the new cover and Duane Propes as Music Producer. It was recorded at ER Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, with mixing done by Bart Busch and engineering by David Spielberg. A-list session musicians included Duane Propes (bass guitar), Mark Matejka (lead and acoustic guitar) and Corey Wright (drums). Stream and download “Amy’s Back in Austin” on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, Amazon Music, Pandora, YouTube Music, Tidal, Deezer and more. About Eli Young Band Since the band’s formation as college classmates 20 years ago, the Associated Press has celebrated EYB as “a smart, relevant antidote” to overdone clichés in Country music. The band has amassed 14 Billboard charting singles, including four No. 1 hits via 3x Platinum “Crazy Girl” and 2x Platinum “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” plus Platinum “Love Ain’t” and “Drunk Last Night,” while also earning an ACM Award for Song of the Year as well as multiple GRAMMY, CMA, CMT, ACA and Teen Choice Award nominations. The musical band of brothers – Mike Eli, James Young, Jon Jones and Chris Thompson – play their own instruments, write their own songs and cling fast to their Texas roots. While selling out venues from coast-to-coast as strong headliners, EYB has also shared the stage with Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, Chris Young, Darius Rucker and Dave Matthews Band. For more information on new music and upcoming tour dates, visit their website and follow on social media @EliYoungBand About George Birge RECORDS Nashville songwriter-artist George Birge was “Always Meant for the Solo Spotlight,” hails PEOPLE, as he supercharges the charts nearing Top 10 with “Mind On You,” off his debut album, George Birge: Mind On You. Also serving “Whiskey Go ‘Round (feat. RaeLynn),” Birge is mixing up a potent cocktail of Texas swagger and Music Row heat after the Austin native relocated to Nashville in 2014. Boasting over 45 MILLION streams across his catalog, American Songwriter further praises, “George Birge has a talent for taking a simple concept and turning it into an in-depth song.” Named one of Nashville Lifestyles’ “Artists You Need To Know,” he’s built a strong touring profile supporting Brantley Gilbert, Jake Owen, Gary Allan, Scotty McCreery, and more. A Kiss Before Christmas
Original Air Date: November 11, 2021 (Hallmark) Where to Watch?: Hallmark will replay it multiple times this season, and for every season in perpetuity
This Teri Hatcher and James Denton reunion movie was one of the most heavily promoted by Hallmark. The duo starred together in the early 2000s series, Desperate Housewives, and it was Hatcher's first time on Hallmark, though maybe not her last based on the strong ratings.
This is a wish/slip in time movie where Denton, frustrated after not being picked for a promotion, wakes up and finds himself single and successful, and soon finds himself facing off with his in-another-life wife, Hatcher, now a savvy lawyer with many, many great coats. You see, they never got married, because they never got stuck in an elevator together, and without being married/caring about anyone but himself, he’s gone a lot farther in the company.
There are also two only rarely seen teenage kids they go to pains to point out are adopted, so we can see them being exactly the same in the alternate life, only living in some sort of foster care/group home situation, as is frequently the case with well adjusted and high performing, white teenagers in our social welfare system.
As always happens in these Family Man take offs, Denton quickly realizes that wife and family really are the life he wants, and that being super successful and wealthy isn't all it's cracked up to be. But, in this case, would it be better if he didn’t go back to his old life, but instead forge a new one, with Hatcher also getting to retain her law degree?
This was somewhat snappy, and Hatcher and Denton are a great team with sparkling chemistry. Like most alternate life stories this makes no sense if you think about it even a little bit, so I'll avoid doing much of that here. Will say I wish there was more of the sparring between our leads, and less Christmas party and tree decorating filler in this story, and the “this one rich lady saves us” thing seemed like a lame way to wind up the plot.
While I still didn’t love how little Hatcher got out of this—she’s still a housewife instead of the lawyer we now know she should have been—contrast this to the dreadful A Family for Christmas from 2015, the last Hallmark wake-up-in-an-alternate-life holiday movie I think I saw, where the Lacey Chabert learned her sole purpose in life should be pumping out kids and then acting as a slave to both to them and her husband. Glad this one didn’t feel quite as much like it was written by a Handmaid, but still wish Hallmark treated women better in their wish fulfillment, especially since their viewership is mostly female.
Final Judgement: 2 Paws Up

Best Movies Coming to Netflix in August 2021
https://ift.tt/3yg0gQx
As quickly as the summer movie season of 2021 seemed to come upon us, it’s already about to begin its long, languid slide through the dog days of August into fall. That’s not to say that theaters won’t still have plenty of interesting fare to encounter, with films like The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, Respect, Candyman and The Night House all on deck. Hopefully the other hideous sequel happening at the moment — Pandemic 2: The Delta Variant — won’t set any of these potential hits back.
In the spirit of keeping August entertaining, Netflix is rolling out a slew of new streaming additions as well, including an underrated Spielberg gem, fantastic teen comedies both old and new, a couple of stoner classics and perhaps the finest film from the canon of one of the modern era’s most revered directors. We’ve rounded up our recommendations below, and hope you stay cool and healthy whatever you’re watching!
Universal
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Beethoven (1992)
August 1
Hollywood in the 1990s was a glorious and furry era when studio executives never met a family movie that couldn’t be improved with the addition of at least one animal character. Beethoven is one of the most successful examples of this winning formula. Directed by Brian Levant from a script co-written by John Hughes himself (alongside Mystic Pizza co-writer Amy Holden Jones), Beethoven is basically the story of how a husband and father, Charles Grodin’s George Newton, feels threatened by the attention his family gives their new dog, a St. Bernard named Beethoven.
George eventually works through some of his issues and accepts the charming Beethoven into the family, a process that comes to a head when Beethoven is dog-napped into an animal experiment scheme run by evil veterinarian Dr. Herman Varnick. (Honestly, the plot isn’t dissimilar to the story in cinematic masterpiece Paddington.) The deep supporting cast includes Bonnie Hunt, David Duchovny, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Oliver Platt, Stanley Tucci, and Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Patricia Heaton. The film’s sequel, Beethoven Second, will also be available on Netflix starting on August 1st.
Dreamworks
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
August 1
As one of Steven Spielberg’s most charming and laid-back efforts, Catch Me If You Can is a breezy and star-studded entertainment. The story is loosely based on the real grifts of conman Frank Abagnale Jr., who beginning as a teenager was able to pass himself off as a pilot, lawyer, doctor, and many other things. But really, this is a cat-and-mouse chase movie between a still baby-faced Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale and Tom Hanks as the FBI stiff who hunted him down. It’s all good stuff, with the movie enjoying a light touch and fresh take on Spielberg’s favorite subject matter: fathers and sons.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
August 1
A shockingly entertaining B-movie about a bunch of genetically engineered super-sharks which break out and take over a testing facility, this is horror silliness at its best with great turns from Samuel L Jackson, Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows and LL Cool J. Partially shot on sets built around the same water tanks used for Titanic, with animatronic and CGI sharks, Deep Blue Sea is action-packed, schlocky fun from director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger).
STX Entertainment
The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
August 1
A bit like Lady Bird before there was a Lady Bird, Kelly Fremon Craig’s Edge of Seventeen is an underrated gem that stars a teenage Hailee Steinfeld as a young woman stumbling through an especially awkward time in her life. Steinfeld is terrific in her best performance since True Grit, playing Nadine as a bundle of insecurities, yet still nobody’s victim. Also of special value is Craig’s hilarious and authentic script, which captures the specificity of growing up in the social media age while being near-universal in its accessibility and empathy for a wide ensemble which also includes Kyra Sedgwick, Haley Lu Richardson, and Woody Harrelson.
Paramount
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
August 1
Just in time for the dog days of summer comes one of the best summer movies ever. Relying on charm and sharp characterization instead of special effects for its spectacle, John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a truly great teen comedy that follows the easygoing bon vivant (or secret sociopath?) of a high school’s senior class when he decides to take the day off in the best fashion: by faking he’s sick and then guilting his BFF into giving him the keys to his dad’s Ferrari.

Never Have I Ever Season 2 Review: This Netflix Teen Comedy Deserves to Run and Run
By Louisa Mellor
It’s silly yet curiously honest stuff about the pressures of young adult life, at least in 1980s suburban America, and a beguiling showcase for an ensemble that includes Matthew Broderick in his coolest role, as well as Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jennifer Grey, and a seriously stoned Charlie Sheen. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re due.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Inception (2010)
August 1 Still Christopher Nolan’s most complete and satisfying film to date (yes, even more so than The Dark Knight), Inception is a cerebral sci-fi set of stacking dolls combined with a rollicking James Bond adventure that all happens to be mostly situated inside one guy’s head. Leonardo DiCaprio leads a team of professional thieves who steal things from people’s minds — only this time they’re hired to implant an idea, even if they have to dive deep into the mark’s subconscious to do it.
Mind-bending imagery and several jaw-dropping action sequences are wrapped around a surprisingly emotional core, with only the usual unwieldy exposition there to remind you that there are some things Nolan may never get right.
Lionsgate
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
August 1 Based on a novel by crime writer Michael Connelly, this gripping, suspenseful 2011 drama arguably kicked off “the McConaissance,” a shift from rom-coms to more serious roles by Matthew McConaughey that launched a new, largely acclaimed phase of his career.
McConaughey is formidable as attorney Mickey Haller, a slick lawyer who works out of his Lincoln Town Car and undergoes a crisis of conscience as his new case starts to feel disturbingly like an old one. In addition to McConaughey stepping up his game, this Brad Furman-directed thriller is the kind of character-driven, literate melodrama we don’t see much on the big screen anymore — although we see plenty of them these days on, of course, Netflix.
Paramount Classics
The Machinist (2004)
August 1 Director Brad Anderson followed up his cult classic 2001 horror effort Session 9 with this surreal, Kafka-esque psychological thriller. Christian Bale plays Trevor Reznik, whose inability to sleep leads him to cause an accident at his industrial job that costs a co-worker (Michael Ironside) his arm. Already physically and mentally deteriorating, Reznik begins an even deeper descent as he tries to unravel what’s happening to him and why. Bale is intense and viscerally shocking as the emaciated Reznik, with his riveting performance anchoring an atmospheric, visually striking film that is sometimes an exercise in style over substance.
New Line Cinema
Magnolia (1999)
August 1
Boogie Nights pushed director Paul Thomas Anderson into the spotlight, but it was his massive, sprawling jigsaw puzzle Magnolia that made him into a superstar filmmaker. Following multiple narratives and numerous characters all finally brought together by a climactic storm of frogs, this is high art packed with standout moments.

Top Gun: Maverick Footage Shows Tom Cruise in Real Jet Behind the Scenes
By David Crow
Movies
Best Modern Horror Movies
By Don Kaye
Tom Cruise is electric as a toxic motivation speaker, Julianne Moore is brittle and tragic as a trophy wife who has grown to love her dying husband, while the burgeoning relationship between Melora Walters’ addict and John C. Reilly’s cop added sweetness and hope to a tale of messed up people and damaged families. Epic.
Sony PIctures
Pineapple Express (2008)
August 1 After its trailer introduced everyone to M.I.A.’s amazing “Paper Planes,” Pineapple Express’s work was already done. It didn’t even have to produce a satisfyingly funny movie on top of that. Thankfully the filmmaking team of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and David Gordon Green decided to give us one anyway, because Pineapple Express is the ideal of the little-seen-or-attempted stoner action comedy.
Rogen stars as process server and marijuana enthusiast Dale Denton, while James Franco portrays his annoying drug dealer Saul Silver. When the pair witness a murder, they are forced to flee hitmen, a pair of corrupt cops, and worst of all, Danny McBride. The Rogen/Goldberg comedy catalog has very few misses and this one is particularly excellent.
Universal Pictures
Seabiscuit (2003)
August 1
No one would ever accuse Gary Ross’ Seabiscuit of being subtle. With its voice-of-god narration by Ken Burns fave David McCoullough, which helpfully spells out the themes of the movie every few scenes, and its achingly sentimental score and dialogue, Seabiscuit is a Cinderella story which all but asserts its titular race horse ended the Great Depression. Yet Ross captures some of the simple American grandeur of Laura Hillenbrand’s non-fiction source material book, as well as the beauty of this true story where a horse that everyone counted out as worthless was nursed by three men into becoming one of the greatest racing animals of all-time.
It’s the type of feel-good yarn that won people over in the 1930s and which is still winning now. When coupled with a handful of strong performances, including from Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper, Tobey Maguire, and a seriously underrated Elizabeth Banks, you have a crowd-pleaser that actually pleases.
Paramount Pictures
Team America: World Police (2004)
August 1 Roger Ebert’s one-star review of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Team America: World Police sums up the film’s nonsensical political stance nicely. “I wasn’t offended by the movie’s content so much as by its nihilism,” the great film critic wrote.
Rog was right to criticize Team America’s incomprehensible worldview. Nearly 20 years later, its seeming position that Alec Baldwin and Kim Jong-Il are equally bad hasn’t aged that well (despite Mr. Baldwin’s best efforts). But it’s hard to argue that the South Park creators’ nihilism doesn’t lead to some great comedy. The novelty of Thunderbirds-style puppets saving the world amid graphic sex acts and voluminous barfing never quite wears off.

The Doors of Eden by Adrian Tchaikovsky My rating: 4 of 5 stars I remember summer holidays in Cornwall spent obsessing over finding the Beast of Bodmin, alas I never did spot it. But what if the Beast was real? And what if the Beast was in fact something far stranger than an overlarge cat? That is pretty much the starting point of Adrian Tchaikovsky's The Doors of Eden a creatively world bending sci-fi thriller. Mal and Lee are two intrepid cryptid obsessives investigating a mysterious sighting on a farm in Bodmin, there they find the six brothers a stone circle that strangely only contains three brothers (stones). On the moors things go strange, snow fall in July strange and suddenly there are six brothers. Lee finds herself alone with only disturbing memories of a monstrous figure and Mal has seemingly vanished into the ether. Four years later Lee still grieving and still alone takes a phone call, the voice on the other end will change everything. Mal's shocking reappearance coincides with the attempted kidnapping of a prominent Trans Dr by far-right goons, an event that draws in the Home Office home security forces (MI5), a dodgy private security asset and decidedly strange foreign agents that are not quite as Human as they appear. Dr Kay Amal Khan a genius mathematician seems to hold knowledge that everyone wants, yet as these disparate forces and parties collide around her events get very weird very fast, as the cracks between worlds grow. I really like Tchaikovsky's sci-fi! The duology Children of Time and Children of Ruin, were both filled with fascinating ideas, hard science and social commentary creatively disguised by the use of anthropomorphic animals. Whilst not narratively related The Doors of Eden makes use of the same formula. Tchaikovsky starts chapters with some zoological what if, fascinating speculative essays succinctly detailing how different life forms could rise to sentience on alternate Earths. If, like me, you find evolution fascinating then these chapters are a real scientific treat. There's a whole kaleidoscope of earth life from the Ediacaran period to the Anthropocene on show that Tchaikovsky creatively develops and evolves to civilization levels. It's kind of brilliant really. Best of all it doesn't overshadowed or distract from narrative, in fact they play an integral part, so best to pay attention! The narrative is well handled having elements of noir mixed with hard sci-fi, the zoological speculation pairs well with a more elaborate take on the many earths, parallel universe type of scientific theories. The jargon and technical explanations sprouted by characters seem legit, at times very reminiscent of the techy expositions of Dr Who or Star Trek where a punchy deliverey helps dialogue sound plausible enough to keep the audience engaged. The narrative is cleverly told from the perspective of the outsiders, the characters who are without the knowledge of just what is going on. As these characters collide and become embroiled in each other’s lives they bring the reader along with them. The 'out-side' perspective is an effective way of managing the story, slowly revealing the mysteries and leading to some epic world bending moments for them as characters and us as readers. Beneath the noir and the sci-fi though is a subtle message of progressive ideals and something of a critique of the supposed culture war. The main conflict of the narrative is driven by the old school ultra-capitalist Denton Rove, who has his own nefarious self-interest at heart pitted against well everyone and everything else, but most of all diversity….and in a book about parallel Earths that’s a lot of diversity….Rove is the epitome of old school conservative values, pettily referring to the Trans Khan as him or Khurram (the previous male identity) just to show that he can. Rove is a total jerk and a rather pantomime fascist but it does lead to a rather surreal and totally non-subtle critique of anti-trans ideology. When the antagonist is hamming it up in his rat king airship lair (literally a rat king airship lair!!) surrounded by black clad Rat people Stormtroopers it's not hard to deduce what side you should be on. Characterization is also deftly handled. The lesbian couple Mal and Lee, two outsiders, Dr Who fans and cryptid obsessives with a fine line in pop culture references, form the emotional core of the story. Mal lost to another Earth when given the chance reconnects with Lee drawing her into a perilous journey where they will truly find their place, each other and cement their love. Hot on their heels is the pairing of Julian 'Jules' Sabreur an emotional dependent not quite James Bond MI5 agent and his 'work wife' analyst Alison Matchell. Their supposedly platonic working relationship, Jules is married, Alison divorced for being a workaholic, is subtly exposed as holding deeper more romantic yearnings that are revealed in the pressures of saving the world. But really who hasn't flown dangerously close to the flame of a work wife/husband….. Jules is particularly well drawn, far and away from the clichéd machismo of spy craft, dependent on Alison's shrewd and gifted analysis both professionally and personally but never himself coming across as actually lacking agency. They make a good team relaying on each other for support in a will they won't they cliché that is imaginatively resolved in a progressively modern way. Jules and Alison's arc felt like something of a gender role reversal, the old delineated sterotypes of masculine/feminine gender roles growing into something more interestingly modern. Even Lucas the right hand muscle, former military, now dodgy private security to Denton Rove finds time for some introspection and character growth away from the standard brainless thuggery of the henchman role. As the characters become more embroiled in each other’s affairs the sci-fi action gets a bit more spectacular and a bit weirder as an existential threat to the many parallel Earths materializes. As friend and foe pool resources the twisty hard science theories help to keep the plot twisting and turning right up to the mind bending finale. The Zoological speculation and hard science is balanced well with a thrilling plot and good characterization all wrapped around a progressive modern social commentary promoting diversity and unity. I really enjoyed The Doors of Eden it is bursting with fascinating science and adventure that takes me back to a magical childhood chasing monsters. View all my reviews
